Living in New Cross

New Cross is a great area for you to set up your student home.

Covering the SE14 postcode, New Cross is one of London’s hottest neighbourhoods thanks to its proximity just four miles from Charing Cross, its urban vibe and its period housing stock. It has even been touted as south London’s answer to Shoreditch. Bordered by Deptford, Peckham and Nunhead, The area’s profile began to rise when Princess Beatrice chose to study History and the History of Ideas at New Cross’ Goldsmiths, University of London.

New Cross Shopping

New Cross has no shortage of grocers lining the streets, with some fantastic speciality stores selling ingredients from across the globe. One of the best is The Allotment, which sells fresh seasonal and local produce, with a selection of craft beers, gluten-free and organic goods. Grab your jute bag and head for 318 New Cross Road. Head to Lewisham College car park for more food options, where Brockley Market stallholders sell street food, fish, cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables – be sure to visit Moo Man and The Butchery. Additionally Deptford runs a thrice weekly street market, and high street stores can be found at nearby Surrey Quays and Lewisham. New Cross’ most unusual shop has to be Prangsta – where up-cycled vintage clothes and period costumes are lavishly displayed.

New Cross Attractions

Culture vultures will not be disappointed. Driven by the art students and successful graduates, the creative scene in New Cross is booming. Try Lewisham Art House on Lewisham Way for photography, botany and yoga classes, along with a free gallery that holds exhibitions celebrating local talent. The Deptford Film Club takes place above the Amersham Arms on New Cross Road and is part of a wider cinematic scene that also includes the Deptford and New Cross Free Film Festival (indoor and outdoor screenings). The London Theatre on New Cross Road is the place to be for plays that try out before transferring to the West End.

New Cross Food and Drink

The flourishing arts scene in New Cross has bought with it an influx of hip eateries and places to hang out. The London Particular is a cosy café cum restaurant where quinoa sits on the menu alongside quiche. Maddy’s Fish Bar right next door is another firm New Cross favourite. A bit further along New Cross Road is No. 178 – a social enterprise that employs local people with learning difficulties. The coffee has legendary status but the venue also has an alcohol licence and holds regular theme evenings. Chinwag and Birdie Num Nums are both making waves on Lewisham Way – a must for great meals and quirky decor. After hours, The Venue – the town’s famous nightclub – is still going strong. Although it has had somewhat of a facelift, it still hosts tribute bands and pumps out cheesy dance floor fillers. For live music of a more discerning nature, visit the Amersham Arms, where established and unknown bands, DJs and comedians ply their trade. The Rose, New Cross House and The Royal Albert are all watering holes worth a mention.
